7 Qualities of a Good Leader!
When we talk about leaders, normal perception comes about political leaders. This blog post of mine is about the top 7 qualities of a good leader, no matter from which fields they do belongs.
I do consider everyone as a leader of their respective fields. You are working in an IT company, and you are leading a team of two three fellow members, you are also a leader. No matter in which field you are working, but if you are managing a few people, it simply means you are a leader.
It is always discussed that what should be the qualities of a good leader. A few days back I interacted with the CEO of a well known and reputed company, he asked me “what is your strength” and my response was “my leadership qualities”.
The next question was “why do you think yourself as a good leader?” and my quick response was that “I do believe that no matter how knowledgeable or less knowledgeable I am, but when it comes to bring the best from a team, I can do it without any hesitation, and the best part is that, not necessarily I do always need the best team for it, but I can make any team as the best one.”
It is normally assumed that a good leader should have clear idea, great idea, great vision, and can bring the best from the team. The leader should have the ability to transform a team into a unit which can have the ability to successfully execute on some of the ideas which can benefit the organization.
Not everyone gets the best resources, but a good leader is the one who has the ability to convert any resources into the best one.
It is normally correct that not every leader will get the best of teams, best of resources to work upon, but if the leader has the ability to help the team, so that they can upgrade themselves into the best one, and utilize the resources in the best possible way, then I must say it is the best quality of good leader.
Here are the 7 qualities of a good leader, if you do see it in someone, promote him/her so that he/she can also be converted into the best leaders of all the time:
The first and the most important qualities of a good leader should be their ability to build a team. Do remember the fact that when a good leader will hire teammates, they will prefer the one who has the quality. On the other hand poor leaders will always go for hiring people who don’t have qualities, so that they can never become a threat for them.
Normal perception is that if you are hiring less knowledgeable guys, they won’t ever say anything against you, but then it is the quality of a leader who is insecure from inside. A leader with confidence and real abilities will always go for better persons, than hiring people who has some limitations.
A good leader will have the qualities to develop a team which will have the ability to work like a team. This feeling of team work can be developed by the leader only.
One of the worst things which I realized in most of the leaders is that they remain biased with some people of their team. Although I do consider that honesty is the best policy and a good leader should always have this essential quality.
The leader should be honest enough and should not take decisions based on prejudice. If the leader will be biased towards anyone in the team, it will create the bifurcation in the team. A prejudiced person can never be a good leader.
On the other hand, if the leader is honest to their team, the team will also be motivated enough to support their team leader.
Confidence being the secret behind the making of a good leader; it is something which can draw a line between the good and the bad leaders.
A good leader will always be confident about the abilities of their team. On the other hand a bad leader will have no confidence in their team. A good leader will try to utilize the maximum of the resources allotted to them, but on the other hand the bad leader will try to finish the task with the help of some reliable guys from their team only.
A confident team leader will won’t mind if someone from the team is coming ahead and suggesting something’s which can help the team to accomplish the task, but on the other hand the bad leader will consider it as a threat to themselves.
There are some days when things don’t go as per plan; this is the time when the confidence of the team leader plays into role. This is the reason why I always suggest companies or organizations to hire good leaders in their team.
Communication ability is one of the most essential qualities required in a leader. You know what to achieve, but if you cannot communicate it properly to your team, then the team will actually waste time to accomplish the wrongly informed things.
A productive work environment can be developed with healthy communications only. This is the reason why communication ability becomes vital for a leader.
A good leader is the one who don’t always remain in a serious mood. Good things can always be achieved by a team which works in light hearted manner. This is the reason why the sense of humor of the team leader becomes a crucial parameter.
There are some instances when nothing goes as per the plan. The leader might lose their temper and can even fire the whole team. But is it the best solution?
I don’t think so.
So the leader who has the sense of humor will try to handle the process without panicking. They won’t shout on team members, or make the mountain out of a molehill.
A leader has the ability to motive their team, and it can be achieved with the help of their positive attitude only.
A leader will always try to do small-small things which can motivate their team to achieve success for their organization. A good leader will be the one who will always remember that human beings are the part of their team, and they do have emotions as well. So they will energize them with the positive attitude.
All the qualities of a leader will be a waste if the person won’t have the ability to lead the team from the front and inspire them.
Inspirational nature of the leader is something which can always work as the cohesive force or element for the team. If you too want to become a good leader, try to help your teammates to visualize your own vision. It will make them the part of the success of the team.
A good leader will always involve the team members into every good thing. They will have the tendency to give credit of whatever success they do achieve to their team, on the other hand a bad leader will always try to blame their team for every failure.
Being said all the above things, I must admit one thing over here, and it is that if you are anyways working in an Indian company then you should not try to become a good leader, or you should not expect a good leader for yourself. Here in any Indian company, a good leader will always be punished by the management, and even the team will also do backstabbing against the good leader.
So cleverness is also required for a leader working out here in India.
It is being said that leaders have the leadership quality as the by born qualities, but it is also not true. Leadership qualities and abilities can also be enhanced on a later stage and can also be groomed as well. It might also come with experience as well.
Please do share your opinion about this blog post of mine. I am hopeful to get some good responses on it.
The most important thing for a leader is clarity of purpose: why he does what he does and then comes his conviction towards his goal. 🙂
Do agree with your point Ravish. Thanks bro 🙂
he should be ready to tread a lonely path if the situation so demands
You are absolutely right Arora sir 🙂
Fantastic Alok.. Being an entrepreneur and having built the team for my company, I found myself nodding at every one of these points. It is very interesting how these skills can be translated into every profession we choose and how much we get to grow as individuals.
I am particularly fond of this one idea of leadership – Transformational leadership. An ideal leader is the one who motivates the team, every single person in the team to contribute to the long term vision of the company or the purpose for which they strive. In the process, the leader induces the 7 characters expressed here and along with it, the inspiration for change which translates into the long term goal of an organization.
Kudos Alok 🙂
Thank you so much Vinay, I am extremely delighted that you liked this post of mine. 🙂
Excellent post Alok! I like how U say leader builds a unit out of a group of people- indeed that is most important. To make the ordinary, simplest ppl perform 2 their best possible levels by inspiring & motivating them! A leader’s most important ability has 2 b -emotional intelligence. IQ is very insufficient rather EQ is most important apart from 7 very deserving qualities that U have menioned!
