9 WordPress Mistakes to Avoid in Blogging!
Mistakes are eternal part of our life. As far as blogging is concerned, we can learn a lot from our mistakes. Here are those 9 WordPress mistakes to avoid in blogging, take lessons from these and never repeat them in your blogging life.
Blogging is a very touching subject, whatever I know about it are through my own experiences only. There was no one in my life from whom I could have taken some guidance. My own mistakes taught me so many things in blogging.
Although it is also true that I am not a big name when it comes about a popular blog. How many people know Alok Vats as a blogger?
But still, there are a few people out here, who look towards me for any guidance related to blogging and SEO. And since I know how it feels when you ask someone for guidance and the person did not respond to you.
This being the reason why I always try to share my little knowledge about blogging and SEO and never say no to someone who is seeking guidance from me. Along with this I also try to make blogs on those topics, so that I can refer it to the person who is seeking helps related to them.
To continue the same, here is a blog post of mine on those 9 blogging mistakes which every blogger should avoid who is working on WordPress platform. You can also read my blog on how to choose a blogging platform for your blog?
When it comes about blogging mistakes the very first mistake which anyone makes is of selecting the free blogs for them. I have insisted so many times that free blogs like blogspot.com or blogspot.in or tumblr.com or wordpress.com are not at all good when you are trying to establish yourself as a serious blogger.
No matter how established you are as a blogger; no matter how much traffic are you getting from your blog; no matter how many people interacts on your blog; it all becomes a waste if you are using a free sub-domain name for your blogs. People normally assume that since you are not investing anything on your blog, it simply means you are not a serious blogger.
Up to an extent I don’t feel any bad about this feeling. After all anyone can visit blogger.com and create any whatsoever blog and start blogging. Does it enough to make you counted as a serious blogger? I guess no, you must need to establish your true authority through your blog and it starts with the domain name associated with it.
Anyways, here are those 9 WordPress mistakes which I think every blogger should avoid in blogging:
You might say me that I am once again saying about the same thing which I said above, but no, I am not once again saying the same thing. When it comes about WordPress as a blogging platform, there are so many people out here who got confused with the wordpress.com and wordpress.org sites.
Well wordpress.com and wordpress.org both provides the same WordPress software, which is considered as the best blogging platform of the world. Most of the successful bloggers in this world are using WordPress only for blogging purposes. The only differences between the two are that wordpress.com is quite similar to blogspot.com or in and provides the free blogging options.
Anyone can visit wordpress.com and sign up there to create any new blog. On the other hand installing WordPress through wordpress.org requires self hosting domain names to install it and develop a blog. Though wordpress.com too provides the option of customizing a domain name for your wordpress.com blog, but still the flexibility which you get from wordpress.org sites is exceptional.
You might be confused about which WordPress options I should go for. Hence, those who are confused with what to choose for – self hosted WordPress or free WordPress can also read this blog post of mine. Honestly in my opinion if you have decided about using WordPress (why WordPress?) for your blog then you should go for the self hosted blog only.
Here is one related blog for you all: Top 7 Reasons why you should Use WordPress?
The second most common mistakes with WordPress blogs are that people mostly selects inappropriate or improper themes for their blog. Themes or templates are the soul of any blog. Proper themes selection is very much required for the future of any WordPress blog.
Some related blog posts which might be useful for this point are how to select the best design for your blog and how to improve your blog design. Although you won’t be surprised to see in both the posts that I emphasized so much on having a responsive theme design. Those who are not aware about the SEO benefits of responsive web design, might argue that what is the need to go for a responsive design?
Honestly, if you ask me, I will emphasize on investing some time on deciding the proper theme for your blog, no matter if it is build on WordPress or on any other blogging platform. A proper design and a responsive design is the need of the hour. Since the mobile searches are increasing day by day, Google is emphasizing on mobile friendly websites and hence I would suggest you that if your blog is not having a responsive theme, then you should go for it right now. You can also read my blog on be ready to face Google Penalty for non-mobile friendly websites. Fortunately both of my blogs I News India and Tech Acid are showing Mobile Friendly by Google.
One more common mistake which mostly new bloggers made while developing blogs on WordPress is of not changing the permalinks of the site. Permalinks is the thing which changes the URL structure of your blog. Mostly people are not aware about it and leave it as default which makes their blog look like a poorly structured blog.
Even search engines don’t like URL’s with ‘?’ parameter; this being one of the reasons why you must need to change the permalinks of your new WordPress blog.
Normally when you set up a new WordPress blog the default tagline associated with the blog is “Just another WordPress site”, “just another blog” or “yet another blog”. Normally bloggers forget to change it and it remains associated with their blog for so long.
It clearly reflects that you are not much serious about your blog and did not even consider changing the tagline associated with it. Hence, I would suggest every blogger to check if their blog too have this default tagline or did he changed it?
You can categorize your content based on different categories with WordPress. The biggest mistakes which any WordPress blogger might make while developing the WordPress blog is that they ignore the categories of the blog and hence all the posts goes to the Uncategorized category of the site.
The first thing while developing the blog is that you should create the categories which you want to feature on your blog, and then only place the content in them.
I must say this is one of the most important things, no matter which blogging platform are you opting for your blog. Backups are very much required for any blog and website as you never know when anyone can hack your website and you can find yourself at a helpless situation.
Either you should make a permanent schedule of taking up the backups of your website, or you can also choose a web hosting provider who can take the regular backups of your blog and store it at different places, or you can also install some plugins like BackWPup, which can take regular backups of your WordPress blog and can helps to restore them at emergencies.
One of the blunders which any WordPress blogger can make in his blogging life is of ignoring the regular WordPress updates. It is something which can make your blog prone to hacking attacks. It is like leaving a loophole in your blog, so that others can hack it quite easily.
If you have selected WordPress for your blogging purposes, then rest assures that WordPress developers and contributors will leave no stone unturned to make it perfect software. This is the biggest reasons why they usually update the core software so many times. Hence, bloggers might need not to fear from this and should always go ahead with updating the core software on their blog.
Most of the time bloggers who are using WordPress relies on the users statistics provided by Jetpack or through some other sources. I assume that not using the Google Analytics software for tracking the user stats of your blog is one of the biggest mistakes which any blogger should always avoid.
Google Analytics is the perfect tracking tools which gives the correct reports of the visitors of your blog. This is a software or tool which I would recommend to every blogger.
Normally there are so many things which a blogger ignores as far as the search engine optimization of the site is concerned, though image optimization is something which I won’t suggest for any blogger to ignore or avoid if they are working on WordPress.
They do provide one of the best options to optimize images. Hence, if you are ignoring optimizing the images of your site, you are actually ignoring the search engines, which might return you some good number of visitors through the images of your website.
If you don’t know how to optimize the images of your website or blog, then you can also read this blog post of mine on how to optimize images on your blog.
So these are the 9 blogging mistakes which WordPress bloggers make and ignore in their blogging career. Normally these are not something which you can really call as mistakes, you might call them as ignorance, but if you found any of this on your blog then it is the right time that you should rectify the same.
We all human being makes mistakes. None of us are perfect. To commit a mistake is not a crime, though, not learning from it and not trying to repeat it again definitely is criminal. So I must say that learn from these mistakes and become a perfect blogger.
Please don’t forget to share your opinion about it.

Dear Kirti, thanks a lot for reading my blog and asking this question to me. Let me tell you yet another reasons why a self hosted WordPress blog is far better than a free WordPress.com blog.
Unfortunately, Google Analytics cannot be used on WordPress.com blogs at this time.
Nicely listed – very useful tips for a beginner or experienced blogger.
P.S- Could you train this form to remember me? It is painful filling in the form everytime.
Dear Sweety, I can understand your pain in filling up the same form again and again, but do believe me it is a way to prevent my site from spammers. You will be amazed to know the fact that I am getting around thousands of spam comments on a daily basis, and if I did make it a bit smooth, the spam comments will definitely make my life hell 🙂 I will then forget about writing any new post on my blog 🙂
Thank you so much for all the help, support, love and care about my blog….
informative n useful post !
Thank you so much Mahesh 🙂
Hi Alok
There is no doubt that almost every blogger or webmaster do these WordPress mistakes once in their life.
& These mistakes help them to learn something new again and again with time.
You have listed here almost all the major WordPress mistakes which bloggers do including me.
I have also did so many mistakes in my WordPress blog. I can remember when I started my 1st blog, I never created any BackUp of my WordPress site. One day, by mistake I deleted the database of my blog from Cpanel and It created a major issue in my site.
I didn’t knew anything about it so I started my blog again by re-installing the WordPress.
That was the unforgettable mistake because It contained hard work of almost 2 months and I completely losed it by deleting the database.
After that day, I always take complete BackUp of my each site.
Thanks for covering such a nice article so that people can learn about these mistakes and also can avoid them. 😀
Thank you so much David for appreciation and whatever you said about taking backup of the database is absolutely right. Thanks for the appreciation.
I would must say that you just rocked in this article. 😀
It doesn’t matter, In which field you are working. You would definitely make mistakes and these mistakes will help you to learn something new. So we should never afraid of doing mistakes.
In this article, the WordPress mistakes which you have mentioned above are very much common which most of the bloggers or webmasters make when they start their 1st WordPress site.
When bloggers like me do mistakes then It is obvious that they can’t generate that result which they want because of that mistake. When It happens, they again start doing all the things and tries to find what they did wrong in previous turn and then they find their mistakes and learn from that mistake.
So some how, mistakes helped us to learn new things. Right? 😀
Most of the people think that doing mistakes will give them failures which they never want but they should understand that every successful person makes mistake at their initial stages and learn from them.
Every WordPress blogger did mistakes when they started using WordPress for the 1st time and same thing I did. When I started my very 1st blog then I didn’t knew that we can also create a BackUp of our WordPress site and I didn’t created any BackUp.
One day, by mistake I deleted the database of my site and completely ruined my few months of hard work. That mistake taught me that never leave any site without creating complete backup of your hard work.
After that day, I always create backup of my each WordPress site.
I would like to give a great Thanks to you for covering these amazing WordPress mistakes which people can use to learn from them. 😀
You said it absolutely right Brenda, we learn from our mistakes, and mistakes make us perfect. Thanks a lot for all the appreciation, am delighted that you liked it so much. 🙂
