How to Choose a Blogging Platform for your Blog?
Choosing a blogging platform is one of the toughest decisions which a blogger had to ever decide. Which blogging platform are you using for your blog? Read on this blog post of mine on how to choose a blogging platform for your blog?
I usually feel bad about those serious bloggers who use to work so hard on a free blogging platform. As per me it is like a waste to work on a blogspot or wordpress.com sub-domain blogs.
Those who are a regular visitor of my blogs, they know that I always support self hosted WordPress blogs for blogging purposes, but those who are new to my blog, they can check other blogs of the blogging tips category of this blog. It can give them a fairly good idea about blogging.
Blogging Platform Options
Blogging Platform Options
When it comes to start a blog, you might have these two options:
Free Blogging Platform
Free Blogging Platform
Free things seem attractive to many people. The same is also true for bloggers as well. I have met a few bloggers who don’t ever want to invest a single penny on their blog, and they are blogging simply because they are getting it for free.
To be very frank, there is no harm in using free blogging platforms, as far as general thinking is concerned. Though when I will explain you the cons of using free blogging platforms, then I am quite sure you would start loving the self hosted blogging platforms and would not prefer using free blogging platforms.
You might say that I am discouraging users to use free blogging platforms, but it is not like that. I will also let you know about how effectively you can utilize the maximum benefits of it too.
Blogger which is the product of Google now, is one of the most tempting blogging platform used by many bloggers for free. They usually provide .blogspot extensions to your blog name. If you will create a blog with myblogname domain, then it will be known by myblogname.blogspot.com or myblogname.blogspot.in, etc.
Second blogging platform which is also popular is WordPress. As you might be aware that WordPress is one of the world’s number one blogging platforms, many people prefer using the free version of it. They provide it for wordpress.com extensions.
Another popular option is tumblr. It is also much popular, but I don’t like it much. Seriously speaking I never used tumblr so I won’t comment anything on it.
Why Blogger?
Why Blogger?
As I already mentioned it in many blog posts of mine that Blogger or BlogSpot is a very powerful blogging tool. You can get it for free and you can utilize all the features of Blogger for free. But when I will tell you the cons of using these free blogs you might be interested in using self hosted one only.
Why WordPress?
Why WordPress?
To know why I love WordPress you can read this blog post of mine on top 7 reasons why you should use WordPress. Let me tell you that WordPress is world’s number one blogging platform and liked by many experienced bloggers too.
Self Hosted Blogging Platform

The second option which any blogger can think about is the premium one and mostly liked by experienced bloggers. You might also read my blog on different types of blogs a blogger can have. This is an option in which blogger should have to purchase a domain name and web hosting for their blog. It will cost you, and this is the reason why many immature bloggers prefer not to opt it.
Though you can get such blogs through WordPress.org, Drupal, Movable Type, etc. but WordPress is the most popular and amazing options for it.
Cons of Using Free Blogs
Cons of Using Free Blogs
To be very frank, other than these options are free; I really did not found any pros which can compel someone to use these free blogs. Here are a few reasons why you should not use these free blogs:
Having Blogspot or free wp blogs is like staying in a rented apartment, you decorate it with so much efforts, but still u know that you are residing in a rented house. You cannot actually claim that this is your own house.
Second thing, you won’t ever find any BlogSpot or free WordPress sites link in Google searches for any competitive keywords. No one actually takes such blogs seriously, be it a normal user, or search engines.
Third thing you will realize the fact that not many people will remember your domain name. After all who will remember something like myblog.blogspot.com?
So these were some of the cons of using free blogs.
How to Utilize Free Blogs?

Well, I did not said much about the pros of using free blogs, since I did not found much. Here is a blog post of mine in which I explained about how you can utilize such blogs too. Read on: How to Become a Power Blogger While Using Free Blogs!
Other than it you can also utilize free BlogSpot platform with the help of a custom domain for your blog. It requires very little investment, but then at least you can have your own domain name. Having used both blogger and wordpress, I would certainly vouch for wordpress with my eyes closed, just cos of its simplicity, the wide variety of plugins available and the search engine friendliness.. All in all, WordPress is a complete winner 🙂
Absolutely correct Vinay and thanks a lot for supporting my views 🙂
Hahah free platforms are like using a rented apartment. True. Many a times i have thought of moving to my own but out of laziness and transferring all the posts, data i leave the thought.
Thanks for reading The Sinhas at No 302 and encouraging with your votes. Much appreciate it Alok.
Best Wishes from Bangalore.
Thanks a lot Shweta for your comment over here. I do know the fact that we all do fear from so many things when we think about upgrading our blog. But then we will have to think about what is best for our blog and for us as well 🙂

Thank you so much for the appreciation, but I do read and encourage those blogs which I do love reading 🙂 Your blog is truly awesome.
Alok, I always find whenever you talk about Blogging Platforms, you just ignore the blogging platform of the Great Amitabh Bachchan – Tumblr. I’m too using it and it has many great advantages over other free blogging platforms. 🙂
Ha ha Ravish, it is not like that I did not mentioned Tumblr in this post, check this para:
“Another popular option is tumblr. It is also much popular, but I don’t like it much. Seriously speaking I never used tumblr so I won’t comment anything on it.”
The question is that it is a platform which I never used, so how can I write about it? Second thing, since I am not at all aware about pros and cons of using Tumblr how can I suggest someone to use it? Third thing it is quite natural that Tumblr has the impression of a blogging platform which is normally used for Reblogging purposes, and this is the reason why I never went to use it. 🙂
Well after retirement I started writing casually about experinces of past, about travels in facebook. Friends liked it which encouraged me to write more. Then somebody suggested & helped in getting free Blogger & that is it. I am still not that computer savvy. Came to know about wordpress later. As of now there are 30217 visitors on my blogs & I feel I should have my ‘own’ page. OK will give it a serious thought. Thanks.
Yes Harsh Wardhan Sir, having own domain name and self hosted blog is very important if you are doing blogging and taking it seriously. Number of visitors are not that important, but the importance is of how they are liking your blog 🙂 Do let me know if I can help you any way in setting up your own customized and self hosted domain blog.
I am using blogger and very used to of it. Till now i haven’t used wordpress.
But still outstanding post 🙂
Thank you so much Gaurav. I am aware the day you start using WordPress you will simply love it 🙂
You wrote about a topic which I was searching for…..This is indeed helpful for me 🙂
Thank you so much Remya, I am delighted that you found whatever you were searching for in my blog.
Excellent post. I completely agree with you about wordpress. I ported my blog from blogger to wordpress.com and found it much more convenient. Can you also tell when should someone consider upgrading to a wordpress.org blog from a free wordpress.com blog?
Well Somali, I always say that having a blogspot or wordpress.com is almost similar and no blogger should use those free mediums. Though since at the beginning we are not much aware about these things, so we can have blogs on these platform. But the moment you realized that you are liking blogging and would seriously work for your blog, you should upgrade to the self hosted one. As I already mentioned that using free blogging platforms are like using an apartment on rent, while having self hosted blogs is like having your own home and you can decorate it the way you want.
This is the reason why I always suggest everyone to go for self hosted blog…
