Different Types of Blogs a Blogger Can Have!
I have seen one thing common in many bloggers, not many bloggers are much aware about the types of blogs which a blogger can have. Read on this blog post of mine to know about the different types of blogs a blogger can have.
Recently I realized that there are many bloggers who are blogging, quite well too, but they don’t have much knowledge about other types of blogging platforms. They are used to working on a platform, quite comfortable working on it, but don’t even know how to change it to some other types which can give them some benefits.
My idea of writing this blog post is not to tell you that you don’t know something, but it is an effort to let you know everything about blogging. Hope these blogging tips can be beneficial for you. Please do share your opinion about this blog post in the form of comments from the below form.
Why do you blog? Don’t know how many times I did asked the same question to you all.
Honestly I created a blog post mentioning top 10 reasons to start blogging and also mentioned some of the reasons at this blog post of mine: 10 Common Blogging Mistakes to Avoid by Bloggers! But still there was something which was inside my heart and I never shared with you all.
To be very frank the main reasons why I do blog is because I want to share whatever little knowledge I do have. Honestly many bloggers are there whose passion is blogging, and they all want to let their audience know about how knowledgeable they are about what they are doing.
So one thing which we all will support is that blogging is the future of the world of web. Undoubtedly it is becoming popular day by day and it is something which is giving pleasure to us as well.
Let us come back to our original discussion of how many types of blogging platforms are there, and how many are useful for us?
Honestly there are so many blogging platforms available in the world of web, but in this blog post I am going to discuss only two blogging platforms and those are Blogger and WordPress. You can also try tumblr, but since I have not used it much so I am not going to let you know about it.
Blogger is one of the most popular blogging platforms available in the world of web. The moment Blogger was being acquired by Google; it has further increased its popularity. You know such sites with a domain name of sitename.blogspot.com or sitename.blogspot.in or any other such BlogSpot extension.
To be very frank, creating and managing a blogger or BlogSpot blog is the easiest way to manage it. It is free as well.
WordPress being the number one blogging platform also provides the easiest and convenient ways of blogging. They do provide free blogging options also, but then they do have one more option, which is actually the best one, but then applying that will require some expenses.
I will let you know the details over here only. Fist let us go one by one:
As I said that it is being provided by Blogger and for free. Honestly it is the most convenient way to create and manage blog, simply register on blogger.com with your Google account and you can choose a blog name and URL and you are done. You can post anything over there and users will be able to access your blog quite easily.
The problem associated with BlogSpot blog is that normally people don’t consider these blogs as serious one. The reason being as the platform is free, many users created many blogs which actually has no sense and thus BlogSpot received the images of free and cheap blogs.
To be very frank, this is the reason why Google now almost display no BlogSpot blog in search results. If some blogger’s blog get any chance to be displayed on search results, their position remains too low. To be very frank, for any competitive keywords search on Google you won’t typically get any BlogSpot link.
Thus, if you are doing it casually, it is okay to have a blogger blog, but then if you are a bit serious about blogging and showing your talent to the entire world, then you should select some other options.
Which types of options?
Well, there are two simple options available with such situation in which you want to upgrade yourself from BlogSpot blog. If you are serious about blogging then either you should have a domain name of yours, or you can switch to self hosted WordPress blog.
To be very frank, having self hosted WP blog is far better than any other options available, but you can still manage with having a blog with your own domain name, and the back end will still remain the same with Blogger. No one will be able to know which back end program you are using, I mean not general users can be able trace from your URL. Obviously experienced people can still track it.
I guess I helped a few friends of mine to migrate from free BlogSpot domain names to their own customized domain name blogs. You can read this blog post of mine on How to Move BlogSpot Blog to Your Own Domain Name to move your Blogger blog to customized domain name of yours. One latest example of the same is the blog of my friend Shwetabh Mathur.
A few days back one of my blogger friends Maniparna Sengupta Majumder commented on one of my blog and her comment was:
“WP sites are more user friendly ? I think so… please discuss about this sometime in one of your posts…”
To be very frank, if you compare Blogger and WordPress, it is undoubtedly true that WP sites have many more features than the Blogger one. I guess I have written a blog post on why to choose WordPress as your blogging platform; which can come handy for this topic. Maniparna, please do check the same and do share your opinion about it over here.
So as we were discussing about types of blogs, WordPress actually provides us two or rather three options to blog. As like Blogger, it also provides a free option, through which you can register on wordpress.com and make your free blog which will have the domain name like yourblogname.wordpress.com
Along with it, WordPress also provides you an option in which you can have your own domain name and you can get rid of the wordpress.com extension and manage the blog from the same platform, though they usually charge around $18 for it for a year.
In the third option with WordPress is the option of self hosted WordPress blog. This is the best possible options available in the world of web. Though it might cost you but then it is always the best as the returns which you will get through it is incomparable with anything.
You can check this blog post of mine to know how you can create a blog within minutes: How to Make a Blog in Minutes!
One of the most common issues which anyone will realize while upgrading their blog is that “I had invested so much time and works on my free blog, upgrading it won’t affect the ranking of my blog?”
Not only this many bloggers think, I might lose my blog if I upgrade my BlogSpot blog to self customized domain or to self hosted WordPress blog.
Honestly it is not at all true. As far as losing the ranking is concerned, to be very frank, you might get a bit down on the day one of upgrading your blog, but very soon you can get back all your rankings, not even that you are suppose to get upgraded ranking as well, as you will get the benefits of your own domain name.
Second you won’t lose anything while upgrading your blog. Ask Pankaj Kumar, Shwetabh Mathur, Rekha Mishra, Anita or Shweta Dave about it and they can better tell you about their experiences. They all have so many doubts about the blog upgrade, but then they did it quite well and like it too.
So those were some of my tips about different types of blogs a blogger can have, to be very frank, I always oppose people using free blogs, just because people don’t value their hard work, and if I suggest someone to have their own domain name at least, it is because I want to let world recognize their work by their name.
To be very frank no one really remember your blogspot domain name, some of my very closed friends are still having those sub-domains, but honestly all the time I had to look for some links to open their site, I don’t even able to remember their domain names after spending so much time on reading their blog.
Though on the other hand those who still don’t want to upgrade their blog, then this blog post of mine might come handy for you: How to Become a Power Blogger While Using Free Blogs! And those who want to upgrade with a domain name can read this blog post of mine: Importance of Domain Name in the World of Blogging! It will help you to understand what things you should take care of before purchasing a domain name.
So how was this blog post? What is your opinion about it? What do you think about this blog post of mine? Please do share your opinion with us in the form of comments below.
Alok, I’ve read Shweta’s lines for you on her new self-hosted wp blog. It feels really good to be around some down to earth & generous persons. I’m glad that I joined IB and meet you guys. Congratz you & Shweta both . And the article is indeed a gem. Alok, please come up with a post on comment vocabulary soon 😉
Thank you so much Ravish. Buddy you know you are asking me to write on something on which I myself is a bit short and hence I am going away from it, but don’t worry I will soon write on to it.
I am really thankful that IB gave me some great friends like you, Vinay, Shweta, Mani, and many more, I cannot even prepare a list of those good friends, fortunately just helped Shweta a bit and she made so many praise for my help 🙂 I am not sure if I am that much good or not, but yes, it really feels good to hear those things from a blogger like you and Shweta. Thanks to you two for such a nice words about me.
Informative post, Alok!
Thanks to all your help & patience, I finally have my own Domain name!
Better late than never! Feels great 🙂 You had been advising this to me ever since we first discussed.
Great that you are sharing your knowledge & helping everyone. Grateful!
Please continue the great work 🙂
Stay blessed!
Thank you so much Anita, honestly I do believe that the biggest mistake which any serious blogger is doing is to blog on a free domain. Honestly a domain name won’t cost more than a thousand bucks for an year, which any person can easily afford and hence I do suggest everyone to not do the mistake of working for a name which is not even giving you an identity. Hope I can be able to let others understand the same 🙂
Thank you so much for all your good words. 🙂
He he.. Alok, let me reveal you my stupidity. I’m using a domain name for link shortening but not hosting. Moreover, I’ve also registered a domain name on my name with .com extension separately and paying for it for last three years without using it. 😀
Hey Ravish that is quite interesting to know. I hope now you will set up your own blog on your own domain names 🙂
Great Alok! I NEVER knew any of the information you have just shared! I am not ready to switch yet, but I want to switch that’s for sure …
You are really patient and generous to help so many bloggers upgrade to better place that is self host sites… wishes for your good work 🙂 Hope to get benefit from your skills in near future 🙂
Thank you so much Kokila, I am always here to help you 🙂 Do let me know whenever you decided to do so 🙂
Thank you so much Kokila for all the good words and appreciation 🙂
This article is for keeps!! you can refer it any time and here is your solution. It helped me immensely. Thanks a lot.
Sorry for a few days I couldn’t concentrate much on the blogging part I was having a tearing busy time. Missed your blogs. Glad I am back reading them. 🙂
Thank you so much Datta. I could sense that you must be busy 🙂 Welcome back. 🙂
Alok, it is a very smart thing with the image you have done, integrating the comment request and the post accordingly. I agree, wordpress does seem a lot more user friendly than blog spot.
But like you said, the primary question of why one should blog is the best way to start any motion or activity.. 🙂 This post is definitely gonna help a lot of people who are planning to have their own domain name and site. A much needed one Alok 🙂
Yes Vinay, you are right, WP is always better than BlogSpot. Thank you so much Vinay for appreciating my efforts. 🙂
Of late I have been thinking of having my own domain but little apprehensive but your post suggestions is going to help me while considering ups and downs….thank you for that
Having own domain name is one of the best steps towards gaining popularity through blogging, all those like you; who are a bit serious about blogging should definitely have a self domain name. Good decision Chaitali. Thank you so much for your comment 🙂
With every blog of yours I am gathering so much information. Very very informative blog!
Thank you so much Shweta. I am glad that you are liking my blog posts 🙂
100000 time u adviced me the same but still im continuing with blogspot.in..:)))))))))))
Good post ..hope people like me will re think..:)))))))))))))
Ha ha Remya, don’t worry you are not the one who is still working with blogspot blog. 🙂 There are many more bloggers out here, actually many of them don’t want to shift just because they feel comfortable with their present status. And that’s why they don’t want to change it.
Hope you can soon convert your blog to self hosted WP blog 🙂
Hey Alok, need little more motivation 😛 Let me share another experience of my self-hosting WP package. Around 7 years ago, our board decided to host a website and we launched a website. It was working great. At that time a company of small town having a website and emails on company name was considered as good brand and we captured a good market and reputation in our locality. At that time blog was new and had huge craze. Long story short, we hosted a blog on company sub domain and thing were going smoothly. But one day, our website was hacked by some learning newbies and all our data were lost. We were new and had no idea how to recover but when we enquired further, it was revealed that hacking was made possible because of that wp blog hosting package.
Ravish, you are talking about a time of around 2007-08, that was the age when I too faced similar types of issues with a few blogs of mine, and you know what? The main reasons behind all these misshapen was our own mistakes. I actually don’t know what had happened with your website, but then please allow me to let you know some of the reasons which caused hacking of my WP sites:
1. I stored the FTP details of my WP blogs on a FTP program, and that FTP program became one of the weakest chain for my sites. That FTP program was being hacked by hackers and thus a few of my WP sites which also includes INI got hacked, though I get back all the things quite easily.
2. I ignored updating the plugins of my site, which gave a loophole to the hackers to hack my WP sites.
3. I ignored updating the latest versions of WordPress, since I was not at all aware about the importance of these updates that time, which I realized later become a loophole for my sites.
So Ravish, you know what in such cases your hosting matters a lot. The day when my site went down because of hacking, my hosting provider helped me to get the back up, though they normally charge $10 for it, but in my case they don’t even asked for it too, since it was a minor issue for them, and then helped me clean the site and remove the malicious things and suggested me all the best way to keep secure my site. You know why I always appraise HostGator for all the hosting needs, it is simply because of this helpful customer care services only, which I unfortunately not even found with Godaddy, or any other hosting providers.
Unfortunately small hosting providers from India, are typically having no knowledge about it. To be very frank, this is the reason why I don’t host my sites on any Indian service provider.
Though retrieving data from WordPress is also easy, everything is going to store in your database, and if your hosting provider is going to help you then you can anytime retrieve back your WP site, unless and until your database is secured.
Anyways those are a story of around 7 years back, now WP has enhanced it self badly and you cannot expect any such things, if you are updating your sites on a regular basis.
Firstly thank you so much Alok for answering my question in such a detailed manner. Secondly , you’ve discussed the things so nicely that even a child would not find it difficult to understand the pros and cons of choosing blogging platforms of her/his preference and the 3 different option WP offer to bloggers. I’ve noticed these days that blogs with own domain name usually get a higher Alexa rank ( I may be wrong ) …so it’s really important, as you’ve said, to have it.
Your posts always are helping us in great ways. Thanks again… 🙂
Yes Maniparna, you are not wrong, but it is actually true that your own domain name will have a higher Alexa Rank, though Alexa Rank is a parameter which I never give any value, but then it happens because since with your domain name, more traffic flow will come to read your blog, thus your blog will have better ranking in all the fields.
Thank you so much Maniparna, I am glad that my blog posts are helping you and others as well 🙂 it is truly giving me a feeling that my life is worthwhile 🙂
Very Informative post for all the new bloggers. I had started with a free blog on blogspot but once i had read in your blog that it’s advisable to have a blog with your domain name and self hosting. Since then, I had wished to my blog with a domain name and it should be self hosted. I had no idea about it. I searched on net how to have a domain but their technical english language went out of my box and so I decided to take help from you. And here I am with somuchthingstotell.com Thank you Alok. And yeah thank you for informing me to transfer my blogs from blogger to wordpress. 🙂 You are really one of a kind person and your each blog is worth reading 🙂
Thank you so so much Rekha, I am glad that you liked all the blog posts of mine. To be very frank, you took a very good decision. Self hosted blogs are one of the finest things; which you can proudly say that it is your’s and it will soon become your identity. Welcome to a new world of opportunities, passion and temptation 🙂
Thanks Alok for explaining explicitly. I know the things have changed. After all, now, I’ve an expert beside me to help me out in any manner. My intention behind sharing the story is that you write an effective post on the topic using your experience and my concerns.
Yes Ravish, don’t worry will be planning the same only 🙂
Hi Alok, Very informative post indeed. To be honest I was thinking long to have on my domain however I was clueless. Like me I am sure many of us were waiting for such detailed information. Thank you for sharing. Great job…:)
Hope I can be able to inspire you to have a self hosted blog Priyashi. I must say one thing bloggers like you are actually wasting their talent on blogspot and wordpress.com sites. You should have a blog of your own, self hosted, customized domain, which will become your identity 🙂
Do let me know if I can help you somehow to update your blog.
Hi Alok, that will be a great help. Will you please guide me instructions to update my blog. Thank you…:)
Sure Priyashi, why not? I will definitely guide you to upgrade 🙂 Thank you for your comment over here.
Thanks Alok Bhai sahab for such guidelines. Expert bloggers like wordpress but blogger is easy for bloggers like me who are not expert.
Thank you so much Sampat Kumari jee 🙂 It is not about expertise but it is all about the convenience. 🙂
I am arriving at this post very late…but thank god I am not so late that the info is now stale :D….
I am not that serious of a blogger like many of you are…but I don’t do it for just “time pass” either. But just like every beginner blogger, I have some plans too to expand….I am going to bookmark this one and cross verify when I am ready and for those questionable moments, I will count on you Alok for a personal note 🙂 …With every such blog post of yours, you are definitely living up to Ruchi Chopra’s title “Blog-O-Pedia” 🙂
Once again Thankyou.
Anytime Vidhya, I am always there to let you know whatever you want to know from me in this regard. It is in fact a good decision to upgrade your blog from free to self hosted or own customized domain name status. 🙂
It always gives me pleasure when someone supports this Blog-O-Pedia status for my blogs 🙂 Thank you so much for all the appraisals.
