Know More about Blogging Etiquette!
There are some unspoken rules in the world of blogging. I am not sure if we all the bloggers are aware about them or not, but yes we do try to follow them. Read on this blog to know more about blogging etiquette.
To be very frank, I am not writing this blog post to let others know about some of the rules, which I think you should apply to me or my blog, but these sets of rules or you can say them as common courtesies are very much required especially if you are a blogger.
Honestly we bloggers are too polite and normally we never feel about abusing anyone. I guess you all remember about one of my old blog post on how to do comments on blogs, I wrote it too without having any thought of abusing any one. Similarly this blog post of mine on some common blogging etiquette is also on some common rules which we bloggers should respect.
I am not sure how much successful I am to express these things, but I guess you all will leave a comment about this so that I can be able to understand if I did a fair job or not?
When we term something as blogging etiquette, it is actually a set of rules which mostly good bloggers do follow in their real life. I guess if you are new into blogging you will be able to learn so many things related to blogging etiquette:
Blogging is not all about appraising what we know. Blogging is actually a way to appreciate others, so that they can influence others as well.
What I feel is that be it blogging, or social media it is not all about what we know and what things we can do, or what we have done so far, actually a good blogger will always try to appreciate others on these mediums.
You might say that I am telling my readers to appreciate my efforts, but it is not true. What I want to say over here is if you are a blogger, you should check the blogs of others as well. If you do like something, then it is your duty to appreciate the same, either in the form of comment on that particular blog, or as a social media share. This way we will actually appreciate the efforts which that particular blogger has given on that blog.
It actually will encourage the other person.
Blogging is like a process of giving and taking. You should give your knowledge and love to others and then only think about getting it back.
Honestly, not many people or bloggers are those who should be loved by everyone. Those types of bloggers are very rare to found. If you are a blogger and you write awesome post, which I am sure you are, but still you need to share your love towards other bloggers to get the love of the bloggers in return.
When you are a part of a blogging or social media community, where you can share your blog posts, don’t ever think about getting more likes without and unless you like other bloggers posts. And honestly it is quite genuine too.
No matter how good you do write, but still you should have time to appreciate others too.
So give and then only take is one of the most essential unsaid rules of the blogging world.
To be very frank, we bloggers are not at all selfish. We usually do help others and ask very less for ourselves. But sometimes I have seen this tendency that people or bloggers use to submit their links on some blogging communities and social media platforms and run away. They don’t bother to like other’s post as well, and then expect that lots of people will appreciate their posts.
I think this is not good. If you don’t let others know that you are the one who is active there, no one else from there is going to like you.
Being a blogger and an active social media guy, I have noticed that people do expect that you should share all the things of that particular person. What I want to say with this point is that first you should never ask anyone to share your post, and second if you are asking too consider if this is a sharable content or not.
You should always try to develop content which are so useful to others that they themselves will feel good to share your content on social media or any other medium, even sometimes on their blog too. I am sure you must have noticed that I usually share links to other bloggers post on my blog.
And then still if you want to promote a particular blog post of yours and ask someone to like and share it, then first consider the fact if it is sharable piece of content or not. As you might be an expert in a particular field, and you are asking someone else to like and share one casual blog of yourself, then I guess this is not a good thing to do.
Just for an example, you all know that I usually write on Blogging tips, SEO tips, Self Improvement tips, Relationships advice, etc. and I usually write some casual post about myself or something related with my personal life. I usually share a weekly post too, but did you ever saw me sharing my weekly post somewhere? Except a few instances, like I shared my post on our wedding anniversary on IndiBlogger, that too because I know my blogger friends will love that piece, and hence I shared, else I normally don’t share my offbeat posts on anywhere.
What I want to say is that being a blogger you should know about which links of your own blog should be shareable or not and if they are shareable then at which place.
Although I have written much about it in this blog post of mine, but then I still believe that you should understand that how can you make sense in leaving a blog comment at anywhere.
First, you should understand that there are absolutely no pressures on you to share a comment on all the things. Do share your comment only where you feel comfortable and you know that you have a valid point to share. Did you noticed my blogger buddy Vinay Nagaraju and his comments on my and others blog as well? Every comment which Vinay will post on any of the blog will be quite authentic and up to the point and will be the part of the blog topic only. I am actually learning this technique from him.
Similarly if you are a blogger, then I am sure you must be getting some comments on your blog too. You should respond to all those comments. Being the owner of a blog, it is your duty to respond to ever comments on your site. I do agree that sometimes we don’t have the time to respond to comments, in that case too try to respond to them once you are free.
If your blogs are getting so many comments, but you are not responding to any of them, your readers will not get the motivation to share their comments on your blog as they will consider you as a disengage blogger.
Also while sharing comment, do always remember the fact that if you don’t have something unique or meaningful to comment, then it is better to say nothing. Share your love in the form of sharing the blog on your social media.
Now this is something which I usually do and think others will also do. When someone share some links of mine, I always try to thanks that person. Not even that I try to visit their profile and see if there are something which I can share on my profile or not. I usually do share their things as well.
Returning the favor is the key behind your success on these sites. No matter if it is related to your social media profiles or your blog only. You should understand how you can return the favor to that particular person.
So these were some of the unsaid rules which I wanted to share with my readers. I am sure if you do like them you must share it with your social media profile and also share your comment on this post.
Please do let me know what you think about this blog post of mine. Please do share your opinion about it in the form of comments.
In general blogging etiquettes is a set of some rules written nowhere and this article will prove very useful for new and less experienced bloggers.
Thank you Sampat Kumari Jee 🙂
Some great tips out there alok!
Thanks a lot Rashmi 🙂
Really great Post Alok! Thumbs up!!!
Thank you Payal 🙂
Thanks Alok :).. That’s very flattering and I am very proud and happy to see this 🙂 ..
Thanks so much 🙂 🙂 ..
Nice post, these are the unwritten rules which make most sense and it is very nice to see them all at one place. I think it is all about adding value Alok, I understand that there is so much of effort each one of us takes in writing a post, appreciation, esp genuine makes such a difference and it makes us feel that the entire effort was worthwhile :)..
Very well said Vinay and you are most welcome too 🙂
Great tips as usual, Alok! Agree with the points!
You should get them all compiled and published as a Book – a Bible for Bloggers 🙂
Lol, thanks a lot Anita, this is the reason why I came up with one book on guest blogging 🙂

Nice one… I agree with all of them but have a question on the last one.. if somebody shares my post but I don’t find their;’s good enough to share, should I still go ahead and do it?
No Seeta, in that case you should not. Simply say a thanks to them and that is also a big thing in social world 🙂
Nice post Alok. The nudge about ‘not al posts r shareable’ was an eye opener. The thought didnt quite occur to me. Tnx again.
Thanks a lot Yogesh 🙂
Hi Alok, Its a great and a much needed post. Yes, there are unspoken rules but rules there are for sure!
I feel that just like in real life a person behaves with cordiality and generousness.. in blogosphere also it should be followed. The effort alone which, one puts on to write something despite having home, kids, spouse and work to take care of.. is appreciable. I think blogging is imparting love and collecting knowledge.
Thanks a lot Kokila. I am glad that you liked it, you said it right that just like in real life we also need to follow our behavior with cordiality and generousness in blogging world as well. Honestly speaking as far as I know, all the bloggers are generous and kind-heart people only. It is very much true that blogging is imparting love and collecting knowledge. 🙂 Thank you.
Very aptly written BLOGGING ETIQUETTES, i agree with all the points out there. Also, when people comment in your blog its an awesome feeling, me being just 2 months old in this blogging world and when i received my first comment i was so happy, seriously!
Yes Lata, you said it absolutely correct. It really gives immense pleasure. Seriously, once I published a blog post on Irfan Pathan, and you won;t believe the number of comments which I received, but that time I was an amateur blogger, later on I realized that most of those comments are not worthy at all 🙂
BTW thanks for your visit and liking the post and sharing your comment 🙂
Another nice post Alok. I wonder how much fair blogger I am though I strive to be one while doing justice to my other roles 🙂 But I have seen that you are definitely worthy to write this post as you are a perfect blogger..
Thank you so much Roohi, you really made my day dear. It is really a great feeling to receive such comments and that too from you is really a pleasant thing 🙂 These types of appreciation really matters a lot for any blogger.
Loved you post. These are few things I would liek to add:
1. Nowdays SEO helps to discover a lot more blogs then the one which actually deserves. The ETIQUETTE word might not apply here.
2. The common thing would be leaving comments and give and take , but i have never seen that happening with most of the top bloggers would exchange the same.
3. I have been blogging since a while now and I have found the if you believe in views and comments then definately you wouldnt have much say on it.
4. How many of us have ETIQUETTE to share others post unless there is word ” Giveaway” or “contest word attach to it.
Agrees with most of your points of view Rutavi, but honestly this is the reason why I have written this blog post. Hope it can bring some awareness. BTW honestly I do believe that we should think about doing only our work efficiently and leave it to the hands of others what they want to do with it. BTW thanks for your comment and sorry for being late in approving it and replying to it.
Alok ji that’s a wonderful post. I always have wondered what makes or attract people to leave comment & critique or even show they were here they liked it or not, wen I started blogging few months back 😀 still what I did was to roam around the wordpress community & really find many like-minded souls to connect, more here on indi blogger community, you all are so welcoming, so encouraging to leave comment for the posts. Initially, I used to leave my link to few of the blogger friends as I wasn’t sure how to do it, saw many people doing that, I follow that too, read it on some place in one Article over Google search, this rule of leaving links, but believe me, I was really very skeptical, so discontinued this 😀 thanks to Indiblogger community, I now finally have like-minded friends with whom I can share, ask & connect.
thanks once again ! take care & good wishes.
Hey Ruchi, thanks a ton for appreciating my efforts and you said it right that IndiBlogger being the best blogging community, provides us so many blogger friends that you can not imagine about. All of them are really good and you can count on them for any help.
BTW as far as comments on blogs are concerned, I have written a blog on the same too, please do check https://www.inewsindia.com/2014/06/16/how-to-do-comments-on-blogs/ this blog post of mine and do share your opinion about it. Also if you want to get the badge of “Top Post on IndiBlogger” then you must read this blog post of mine: https://www.inewsindia.com/2014/06/06/how-to-be-successful-in-indiblogger/
I agree with every point here. The last one is so true..not replying to comments made on one’s blog creates a feeling that she/he is not at all interested to any kind of interaction with fellow bloggers. I have experienced this a number of times and know how it feels… 🙁
Very well said Maniparna, it really feel bad when you share a beautiful comment and no one responds to the same, especially it feels too bad when the author did not respond to any comments. I am sorry for being late in responding so many comments during last few days, and the reason being the sickness of me, my wife and then my Garima as well. As we three were on fever it becomes too hard for me to give time on my blogs and that’s why took an unwanted leave from it.
BTW thanks a lot for liking the post. 🙂
Alok, It’s a very good article. Its true that bloggers should not be selfish. Helping others is a sign that you have a good knowledge of your niche. It’s a way to establish yourself in the blogosphere.
Regards.
Thanks a lot Kushal for supporting and appreciating my points of view. 🙂 I am glad that you liked this blog post. Thanks again for sharing your comment with us. 🙂
Hey, that’s quite a good and effective list of etiquette you mentioned. But I must say, all of them are 100% true and effective.
Especially, I like your thoughts on “appreciation”. It’s true. When you are doing something, you need appreciation to keep it going on. Otherwise, the tempo is lost somewhere.
Great post. Thanks! 🙂
Thanks a lot Kaustav, I am really great that you liked the post and shared your opinion about it. You are right appreciation being the key in every field of our life. 🙂 Thank you for appreciating me to write such posts again 🙂
