How to Check if your Website is Not Dead?
Sometimes it becomes too hard to decide if a website is simply sleeping or dead? Here are some points to check if your website is not dead?
To be very frank when I am saying if a website is either sleeping or dead then it simply means if it is usable to the users or not?
Sometimes it happens that we ignore updating a site and it remains in the same stage for a long-long time.
In case of blogs too we usually don’t get time to publish any new blog for a long time period and hence we can say that this particular blog is sleeping.
Despite being the fact that the website is not updated recently we cannot say that a particular site is dead. A particular site can be claimed as dead if it is of no use for its visitors.
Here are some of the criteria’s which can say us if our website is dead or not?
Many a time we can notice that if a site is ignored for a long time, it will start taking long to upload itself. The reason being every website uses so many javascripts, scripts, plugins, etc. and if they are not updated will become a problem and took long time to upload.
This is the reason why it is suggested that always update all the plugins and scripts of your website or blog.
As you all know that these days Google emphasize so much on the website speed, so if your website is sleeping also, don’t forget to update it so that it should load faster.
So consider the scenario in which a website doesn’t upload for a long-long time, you can simply consider it as a dead site.
I can assume that you all have already gone through a recent blog post of mine on the SEO benefits of responsive web design. But in this case when I am saying site responsiveness, then it simply does not include the responsive web design only. It also means so many things.
If a website is not being updated since long it will be quite obvious that it won’t have the responsive design. But then do check if your texts are readable or not? Do check if you are being able to navigate your website easily on almost all the devices.
If these factors are okay then you might say that your site is still alive, only thing is that it is silent only from some time.
So if you are not planning to update your website for a long time, I would suggest you to let it be updated once with a responsive design and then let it sleep for some time.
Now it is quite common that if a site is not at all usable to a person, then it is simply a dead site for them.
Let us assume a site which cannot be used for any services or products, but then still it might be providing some information to the users which can still make it alive. Consider a blog, which has not been uploaded from so long, but still the old blog posts of it is useful. The old blog posts are providing some unique information to its readers.
And hence, you can’t say them as dead.
You can consider a static site of 4-5 pages only, if its webmaster is also not updating it from so long, it simply doesn’t means that it is dead, unless it is providing some value to the users who is landing to it. Let’s say a page is there which is providing link to some well known and informative resources. Thus it can’t be said as dead.
The last but not the least factor is that webmaster sometimes even forget to renew the domain name, and hence it will start displaying that it is a parked domain now. This is something which can truly be ignored if you really don’t want to announce that your website is dead now.
Sometimes it happen that we planned to do so many things on a website, but unfortunately we either failed to allocate resources on it or due to any unfortunate reasons it remains in silent stage for a long-long time.
I guess we can still make some changes on it so that it can remain alive. Hope this blog post of mine will help in doing so. Please do let me know your response about it.
Great Post! Now i am wondering if my site includes any of these points as I am not able to understand why its slow from last 1 month… ;(
Thank you Payal, I would not say that your site is sleeping as you are posting regularly over there. But if still your sites speed is slow then you must need to check up the hosting of the site.
Thanks Alok 🙂
You are most welcome Payal. The pleasure is entirely mines 🙂
