To be very frank a responsive web design is a special quality of any website which forces it to take the shape as per the devices on which it is being opened or visited.
As simple as that you can place a glass of milk into a bottle and see that milk which was shaped as the glass a few minutes back will look like a bottle once poured into it.
Similarly, a website when opened in a desktop will have different shape, if it is built with the responsive design techniques, and the same website will change its shape if opened on a tablet or smartphone.
Basically this quality is something which guides your website to place particular things in a different manner on a different device.
Ranking on Google search is the primary step to your website’s success, which is possible through SEO. So here are some of the SEO benefits of responsive web design which can force you to go for it:
I assume that you all are already aware about the growing uses of mobile phones, smartphones and tablets as far as internet browsing is concerned. These days every second person is using their mobile phone or tablets to browse the internet.
Growing uses of different sized devices forced everyone to go through the responsive web design as you never know which devices will be used by your visitors to open your website. In case you don’t have the responsive web design, user might feel irritated after opening the site in an unmatched device.
Thus overall non-responsiveness of your website or blog might kill the popularity of your site.
Believe me; selecting responsive web design will definitely increase the popularity of your site in mobile visitors.
Gone are the days when you need to either create a sub domain or a different folder to store the mobile version of your website or blog.
It was not a story of too past, but a few years back only I was trying my best to configure the same website inewsindia.com into m.inewsindia.com and believe me despite trying for the same I failed to do it.
But since the inception of the responsive design on I News India, I need not to create or optimize my site for two different URL’s. With this responsive design my website will change its look as per the device on which it is being used, and hence I need not to worry about optimizing sites for different URL’s.
Thus a responsive web design allows you to focus all of your optimization efforts (and budget) on one URL. It also helps you to promote the same URL on different social media and networking websites.
If you think about this in the perspective of search engine optimization, you will realize that how important it is to select responsive web design for your website. No matter how established your website or blog is, if you planned to develop a separate mobile website, you will have to build the authority of this new site in an entirely new way and from scratch. You will need to know where to find shopify expert developers for this.
Google might also consider this separate mobile website URL as a new website which has copied content from your website.
Thus helps catching you into the trap of the duplicate content as well. And hence it is advisable to go through the responsive web design only.
If you know a bit of SEO, or have gone through my blog posts on SEO, you must have realized that search engines like Google always prefer to display sites which have better user experience on to their SERP.
A responsive web design along with the killer content or informative information’s which your website is providing will definitely increase the user experience level, thus helping you out to get the love from search engines.
You might say that people will normally share whatever they will find useful. What is the point in saying this for responsive web design?
Agreed with your point, but did you ever realized why is it happen when people sometimes ignore sharing a quite good post in their social networks?
Well, do let me tell you about this. It is the poor designing of your website which irritates the user and forces them to quit the site, despite being the fact that they might have liked your content.
Thus as you realized that a responsive web design is something which can enhance the user experience and thus will increase the social sharing’s of your website, thus directly helping towards the SEO of your website.
Believe me social sharing’s are something which you cannot achieve despite spending some decent money as well.
You know the fact that in a SEO world, after Google Panda and Penguin updates, bounce rate are something for which every internet marketing guy and website owner is looking towards. If your website doesn’t change its shape and fit according to the screen size of a mobile phone there are high chances that users will bounce back.
Thus the bounce rate of your website will increase drastically. It will definitely give a wrong impression of your website to Google.
Thus Google might consider that your website is not providing relevant things to the user, thus they might penalize your site as well. If not penalized then too your ranking will definitely fall down a lot.
And hence responsive web design is a must for your website.
I guess those 5 points which I explained above are something which can forces you to go for a responsive web design. To be very frank, with my ten+ years of working experience in the field of SEO and internet marketing field, I can say that Google truly loves the responsive web design and gives more value to sites which has responsive design than those sites which has non-responsive web design.
Though you can argue some points in the favor of a separate website for mobiles, but then with my own experience I can say that having a responsive web design is always better and favorable than having two websites, one for desktop and other for mobiles.
Do let me know what is your opinion about this? Do share your opinion with us in the form of comments and I will be glad to discuss on the same.
That’s very interesting Alok, I wasn’t aware it used to be a different sub domains for different sized hostings. That would have made life so challenging for both a person maintaining the site and the one reading it.
The decrease in bounce rate bit and the increased sharing are very valid points.. Glad that wordpress came with a built in plug in for that or else I would have suffered to every inch of my bone 😀
Thanks a lot Vinay for sharing your comments and appreciating my efforts on this blog post. 🙂
