If you’re a writer who is expecting your blog to make money right away, you’re going to be sorely disappointed. While some people are able to start typing and making money right away, this is the exception not the norm. We’re going to go over the main reasons your blog isn’t likely to make money as soon as you start so that you actually have a chance of making some money in the long term.

Why Blogs Don’t Make Money

Let’s start with a list of some specific and informative reasons that your blog is likely not going to make a lot of money right away.

Competition

The biggest reason you’re not likely to make money right away when you first start blogging is that there’s so much competition. Even if you spend time thinking of a topic or niche you think isn’t covered, there’s likely going to be a half-dozen or more blogs that are already writing about the subject.

Audience

Going along with the first point, with all that competition it’s going to be difficult for you to attract an audience. And if you have no one reading your blog, there’s not really a chance you’re going to make money. Building an audience takes time and dedication.

No Passion

Another frequent problem is that people decide to blog about a topic because they think it’s popular and will make them money and not because they’re interested in it. This is a big mistake, because without passion your writing is going to suffer and you’re going to have a really hard time attracting the audience you need in order to make money.

No Work

Most people aren’t willing to put in the work that’s necessary to make a blog successful. You really need to work hard if you’re going to grow an audience out of thin air and get them to click on ads so that you can make money. And if you don’t put in the 60+ hours of work per week that’s needed, there’s a very good chance that you’re going to fail and not make any money at all.

The points outlined above show that it’s just not realistic for a brand new blogger to start up a website and start making money. Having said that, those that keep at it and start to build their audience and readership over time are going to be the ones that succeed. In the blogging game, too many people give up before they even have a chance to get started. And that’s why they don’t make money. If you’re a new blogger, we’d love to hear from you.
