CAPTCHA Pros and Cons-

I didn’t realize until now that CAPTCHA is an acronym and it stands for “Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Human Apart”. It’s an anti-spam tool, alright but is it really worth it?

CAPTCHAs are used to avoid machine bots which will post comments automatically on multiple websites.

Spamming all the sites around.

Why would someone do that, is a different story but I can tell you this that no one will do anything like that unless there is some benefit out of it.

There are several types of CAPTCHAs on the web, of the ones I’ve come across are –

1)    Image identification Challenge – Couple of random words

2)    Simple math problem

3)    Solve Media advertising in CAPTCHA. Solve Media provides a new medium for publishers to monetize. Details later, you can check out their site for more details – http://solvemedia.com/

4)    Simple game CAPTCHA. Very addictive! Are you a human? http://areyouahuman.com/demo-playthru/

Pros & Cons of Captcha

Pros –

  1. Weed out the spammers, autobots
  2. Keep your blog/site safe from spams
  3. They are easy for the site admins and moderators to maintain their site, forums, messageboards etc.

Cons-

  1. Too little benefits for publishers/bloggers.
  2. They are annoying.
  3. Risk of losing readers – Because CAPTCHAs are not 100% effective in reducing spams, we risk losing genuine readers.

Do the pros outweigh the cons? Maybe, probably, for larger and popular websites.

So whether or not to use CAPTCHA should depend on the size of your site, should depend on the popularity of the site, views per day and whether or not you can moderate the site manually.

For a small blogger like me, I wish to ditch CAPTCHA challenge for now and moderate the comments manually.

Please leave your comments on CAPTCHA and let me know if I have missed anything, would be happy to add to my list.

About Author (From the Pen of Editor of I News India i.e. Alok Vats):

This blog post is being written by Ananya, one of my IndiBlogger friend, and who does blogging at http://ananyatales.blogspot.in/ To my surprise, when I first read her blog posts, I could not guess, she started blogging just few days ago. She creates blog posts in a very powerful manner, when we connected to each other at IndiBlogger, and now at G+, it give me some real happiness to connect with such a nice blogger.

When it is quite common that people prefer doing copy-paste types of blogging as I mentioned in one previous blog of mine on why we can’t develop original content, it is a huge relief to meet with bloggers like Ananya who prefer writing original blog posts only.

I am quite sure that you all will like this blog post on how to disable the Captcha features at Blogger platform and what are the pros and cons of using Captcha in your blog. Please do share your comment about the blog.
