Six Telephonic Interview Tips that Can Fetch You a Job!
These days’ telephonic interviews have become one of the most important procedures of the selection of any candidate for any job. Although I can say that getting success in the telephonic round of interview will not give you the certainty of the job, but yes it will be a plus point for you when you will face your interviewer face to face.
After all the success in the telephonic round will only give you a place for the face to face round.
One of my friends who is handling recruitment from last six years for a big MNC, confirmed me that these day’s telephonic interview has become necessity, as the recruiter only want to face the candidates who can actually clear the telephonic round. The reason behind all this is that they don’t want to waste the time. A few years back the concept was that HR people can have a small discussion with the candidates and called all of them for the interview, but when the concerned person meet them, they would reject many of them just from the very first interaction.
The reason behind this was that the HR person was not an expert in the field for which the interview was going on, while the concerned person who was an expert in the related field, will reject many of the shortlisted candidate, just because they were short of knowledge for the required job.
Thus, it emphasized the need of the telephonic interview process, in which the industry expert will analyze the candidate in advance and once satisfied will only call them for face to face interview. Thus to clear the telephonic interview has become one of the most important criteria for being selected for a job.
The other reason behind the popularity of this trend is the globalization, in which we all don’t hesitate to shift to any new place for a better opportunity. Thus while selecting the right candidate; residential status of the candidate does not play much role these days. But the HR person would not call anyone for the face to face round as then it will waste the time and money of both the parties.
So basically, telephonic interview has become the pre screening of the possible candidates for a particular job. So what I will suggest you all is that always take the telephonic interview as serious as you were facing the real interview in front of your would be employers.
Frankly, latest technologies have always helped the candidate to give the telephonic interview, and the employer to take it easily. For me these can be much more difficult than the face to face interview, as in f2f round I can analyze the expressions of my interviewer and change my responses according, while in a telephonic round I cannot be able to even see my interviewer.
Here are a few job tips which can help you to clear the telephonic round of interview.
Prefer Landlines than Mobiles
Considering the network problems which we usually face with the mobile phones, landline phones are always preferred over mobile phones as far as the telephonic interview is concerned. Whenever a recruitment or HR personal wants to fix things for a telephonic interview, you should always mention him/her your landline number and the preferred timing so that you can remain available for the call.
The normal problem with the mobile phones network is that it can create irritation in the mind of the interviewer. We usually see problem in talking with the mobile phones, as the movement might cause some network problems and congestion.
So, using landline phones are always better than using the mobile phones for the telephonic round of interviews. But, what about the candidates like me, who don’t have the option of a landline phone?
In that case chose mobile phones only, but always pick an area where you can talk to the interviewer freely and with no disturbances. Always make sure that you should pick an area where you can get the good mobile network signals, thus you can avoid any network related problem.
Well Prepared
So now the things are in place for your telephonic interview. I would suggest you all to take the telephonic round as serious as you can take the face to face round. Consider collecting all the required data at your hand before setting for the telephonic round.
Let me tell you all how I usually prepare for a telephonic round in the past. I use to write all the past experience details, academic details, etc. on a paper, and take them in front of me at the time of interview; also I use to take the print out of the CV which I sent them.
Thus keeping things handy at the time of the interview always helped me to respond to the interviewer quickly and without being wrong too. When I say you should be well prepared for the interview, it does not mean that you should be well dressed up for the interview; rather you should remain prepared mentally for it.
Make Your Self Free
While you have fixed the phone through which you will give the interview and you prepared all the required documents too and kept them handy as well, but make yourself free as well before 5 to 10 minutes of the scheduled time for the interview.
Try to spare 5 to 10 minutes while rehearsing for the interview, before the final call, it will ease the pressure from you. Due to any worst case, if you need to delay the interview, please ask the interviewer in advance to make the appropriate change in the schedule.
Distraction Free Interaction
Well, it is the responsibility of the candidate to provide the distraction free environment to the interviewer so that both interviewer and the candidate can only concentrate about the interview process only. As, the candidate is not going to the office of the recruiter for the telephonic round, so it is all his own responsibility so that he can deliver the best to the interviewer.
Thus while preparing for the interview you should need to fix that the place which you have chosen for the interview should not have any kind of noise. If the kids are there at your place, try to isolate them from the preferred interview area for that particular time frame.
You should know that the noises might divert your attention and you might miss something and at the end you might lose the opportunity which you were getting.
Your Voice Should Be Clear
While giving the interview, always greet the interviewer in the best possible way, and try to talk as much normal as possible. Always try to make your voice as clear and hearable to the interviewer. It should not be that much loud or of low volume so that the interviewer will have the problem to hear it.
Don’t try to speak in a very fast manner, so that the interviewer did not get what you were saying, rather you should speak slowly, but not in a very low sound.
Avoid Eating
One of the biggest avoided things during a telephonic interview is any types of eatables or drinks. Eating and drinking while talking is in fact a really bad habit, and especially in the case of an interview it is always considered as too bad.
Chewing Gum is a strict No when it comes to give a telephonic interview. The interviewer should not be disturbed with any types of noises.
So, that is the all six tips which might help you to fetch the desired job. Along with all these tips, confidence is something which is always required to face any interview, so don’t lose your confidence in between the interview. In some cases you might not be aware about the response of any particular question asked by the interviewer, in that case my suggestion is simply explain the situation with the interviewer and I am sure that he will truly understand your condition and respect the truth.
