How to Prepare your Outlook for an Interview?
The basic things which you need for an interview are your experience, the right attitude and your ability but interview attire is also an important thing which cannot be ignored. Your attire will provide the first impression of your personality and everyone wants it to be good. It definitely counts when you go for an interview, so learn few basic things while going for an interview.
Suits – as far as professionalism is concerned suits are the most perfect clothing and nothing else can fit the bill. Wearing a suit for an interview is a great idea especially if you are planning to become a part of a formal industry like banking, law or administration. Suits also come in great variety, so be a little wise making the selection. For instance, do not wear printed suits; it would be a blunder if you do so. Do not wear very bright colors rather stick to sober tones like grey, blue and all earthy colors. Wearing too bright will not add any spark to your personality.
Shirt – your shirt should be well ironed and properly tucked in for companies dealing in more formal purposes like law and banking. Whereas you can try button down shirts for companies which have more relaxed way of working like media or production houses. When thinking of wearing something under a suit then white seems to be the best option as it goes with almost everything. And it even works as a great canvas for the tie. You can pick up a tab collar or a straight collar shirt, whichever suits you best.
Tie – whenever wearing a formal suit ties is a must. So make sure you get one which complements your suit as well as your over all look. An important advice do not wear ties with cartoons or flowers on them, this is not a birthday party you are going to, also bright colors are a strict no. stick to dark tones like burgundy, blue or brown, they are acceptable at any interview and makes you look conservative enough. So selection of tie is important for your overall personality.
Shoes – they are at the lowest but are of utmost important, they play a very crucial role in completing your attire. When you wear a suit shoes should be either laced up or cap toed. You can try out loafers for semi-formal looks. Do not look unprepared by not cleaning your shoes. You do not wish to give interviewer a sneak peek into your dirty shoes. So just make sure you clean them a day before your interview.
Hair – whenever you are going for an interview get rid of your messy hairstyle, it provides a really bad impression on the interviewer. It is better to keep them short as it gives a more professional and tidy look. Long hair are completely acceptable only if you are interviewing for some rock band, some entertainment show or something of that sort but not when you are going in companies looking for young hardworking professionals.
Shave – men forget that this thing even count, well it definitely does. A shaggy or stubble bearded man is likely to give a negative impression on the interviewer whereas a clean shaven guy will provide more positive vibes. Get ready to strike the interviewer with your attractive personality and presentable looks.
Belt – wear a cordovan or black leather belts which match your shoes.
Accessories – the only thing you need to team up with your clothing is a nice and conservative watch with a custom Rubber Watch Straps. Remove your earing if you wear them especially when going for an interview in conservative companies like law firms.
Last tip, everything should be well ironed and clean. Clearly inspect the clothing with dangling threads and cut off the label on your sleeve.
Now, some tips for women clothing.
Never confuse business attire with club attire; both are different things for different occasions. If you had worn a dress in a club then do not even think of wearing it for the interview.
Tailored pants look great and are just appropriate for the event. You can also think of pants suits if your work profile requires you to visit sites and lot of traveling. Whenever you wear pants just make sure that they are properly creased and tailored, they shouldn’t be flowing or tight. But if you have a little doubt on how formal the company is then stick to the formal tailored pants.
Do not get encouraged by professionals wearing masquerades you see on television as it is not at all appropriate for a work environment. The skirt you wear should be able to cover your thighs when you sit. All it does is make you look really foolish at work although naivety is at its best. A skirt should be knee length and gives you a professional look. When you go shopping a skirt, have a look in the mirror while sitting because that is how your interviewer will be able to see. It should not be distracting rather it should be appropriate for social gatherings and business environment. Small slits are allowed but avoid high slits.
Color selection is also important; one should stick to black, dark grey, navy or brown. However women have a wide variety of colors to pick from as compared to men. Wool blends, wool or high quality blends are the most appropriate for women’s suiting. As far as shirts or sweaters are concerned, women can wear fine quality knit shell or fine gauge underneath a suit jacket. Do not show off cleavage, it is reality and not media who is trying to attract viewers. One should maintain the decency of professional environment. |
The last thing which needs to be understood is that you are going for an interview and not to a fashion parade. It is the ability which will ultimately get you the job and it is what matters most.
