Four Effective Treatment Tricks for Indigestion!
Everybody must have experienced being awake in the middle of the night because of some sudden and very painful burning sensation in the pit of his or her stomach or chest. This condition is called heartburn or indigestion. And there are four general remedies for this. These four remedies are all effective; no matter what it is that you might have eaten that had caused it. With them applied, you will shortly get back to your sleep because your heartburn or indigestion will soon be alleviated.
Most people treat heartburns and indigestion by drinking a glass of milk. Some consume candy mints. But these are not really advised. Milk might make you feel good, but only temporarily. The fats and proteins contained in the milk would cause your stomach to produce additional acid. And as we all know, acid causes both heartburn and indigestion. And more acids produced in the stomach would just make the condition worse.
It is the same thing with mints. Although they seem to soothe your indigestion, they don’t really eliminate the acid. What it does is it relaxes the valve situated between the stomach and esophagus. And the job of that particular valve is to keep acids at bay. So when that valve relaxes, the acid will have an open path to move up towards the esophagus. And that would only make the pain associated with heartburn and indigestion worse.
So instead, mix one tablespoon of baking powder with half a glass of water. Drink a tall glass of water first and then the mixture. That should make you feel better after an episode of heartburn or indigestion. However, if you are pregnant or have a history of high blood pressure, this is trick not for you. The baking soda and water formula may cause either water retention or increase your blood pressure.
Another trick you can follow to prevent heartburn and indigestion is to eat a piece of banana everyday. Banana is a known antacid and by that, it effectively eases both these conditions. But at the exact moment you are feeling indigestion and heartburn, what you should eat is either papaya or pineapple. You can also drink their juices, if you prefer that more. These two fruits will naturally settle down the acids in your stomach. They are definitely the better alternatives to the medicines you can get from drugstores. And also, a teaspoonful of mustard is said to help a lot with indigestion. A good tip should both these fruits are not available or not in season.
The third trick is to avoid the habit of eating before going to bed. It is advisable that you do not eat two hours before sleeping. Midnight snacks would only require your stomach to work overtime. And that alone would prevent you from enjoying a deep and restful sleep during the night. And for some, eating late night snacks requires them to sleep at their sides or in an upright position so that acid won’t go up and cause discomfort.
The last trick against heartburn and indigestion is to avoid the very foods that cause them. Examples of the foods you should avoid are soda pops and other beverages with caffeine. Chocolates, garlic, alcohol, and citrus fruits should also be avoided. Tomatoes and tomato-based products can also bring about the symptoms associated with these two conditions.
Some people believe that drowning a teaspoonful of vinegar would ease heartburn fast. We know that vinegar is acid. So it is a wonder how another acid could stop its own kind.
But in truth, it might help because heartburns happen due to a very minimal acid content in the stomach. And so when vinegar is taken, the acid content in the body rises a tiny bit and so it would calm down. And that is believed to eliminate the pain and suffering associated with both heartburn and indigestion.
Thanks for the information. I am suffering right now. I had soda and beer last night and coffee this morning. Can it be a combination of last night and this morning? I hardly ever get this and I haven’t even eaten anything yet today. I’m glad I finished reading your article through. As soon as I saw mint candy, I was about to grab it. Glad that I didn’t. I will try one of these remedies! Thanks again!
I believe that avoiding refined foods would be the first step to help lose weight. They will often taste great, but refined foods have got very little vitamins and minerals, making you eat more just to have enough energy to get through the day. When you are constantly ingesting these foods, transferring to whole grain products and other complex carbohydrates will help you have more energy while consuming less. Great blog post.
Hey mate, thanks for your comment.
Thank you so much. I’ve been drinking gallons of
milk in the hope of lowering the need for medication,
now I know why my symptoms are getting worse. I’m
swapping this for pineapple juice and having banana
for dessert each evening. Fingers crossed. Thanks again
for very sensible advice.
Thanks a lot Isla-Louise for your comment and appreciation.
