I have to agree with Alok here. From personal experience, when i am really nice to everyone, there will always be a few who will just walk and be nasty to you. From work perspective, they try to be bossy and horrible. They are called bullies and don’t deserve any respect. You don’t need to be rude but ‘assertive’. But if they get nasty and you should give the same treatment. At first, i didn’t understand ‘why’ they treated me this way, until later on you realise that not everyone is nice in this world. This experience did change my attitude towards life and being assertive.
